minutesIngredients
1 eight-inch flour tortilla
Condiment(s), such as mayo and/or chili crisp
Fresh herbs, such as basil, optional
1 slice of cheese, such as provolone
1-2 thin slices of cold cuts, such as turkey and/or hard salami
Directions
- Spread your condiment(s) onto the tortilla. (Layer on the herbs.) Lay on the cheese and then the meat.
- Fold the east and west sides toward one another, and while holding them in place, fold the tortilla in half, bottom to top. Tuck the sides in as necessary, to fit the sandwich into your toaster. Set the toaster to 7.
- Toaster tongs will come in handy for removing the sandwich from the toaster.

This isn’t fancy in any sense … it’s barely even a recipe. But it’s something I never thought of until I stumbled onto the idea, and it’s freaking genius. How many times are you hanging out at home, and have a hankering for a sandwich? And how much better is a hot sandwich than a cold one? Plus, this could barely be easier.

Corn tortillas aren’t flexible enough to work like this.
As you’re laying out the filling, remember that when you fold the tortilla over, it will double in thickness. So, don’t add too much filling.
The east-west fold is critical. Otherwise, you won’t have a pocket, or enough of a pocket, and your filling will leak into the toaster.
The tortilla is going to crisp in about six minutes. In seven, you’re going to have as much char as you could possibly want. I think eight would burn it. However, I’m talking about my toaster, which, like most toasters, allows you to set only time, and not temperature, and who knows how standard toaster temperatures are. You’ll have to experiment with your own settings.
If the tortilla is perfectly crisped, but the filling isn’t hot enough, then either you have too much filling, or you should parmicrowave the pocket before toasting. How do you like “parmicrowaving?” I thought that up as extension of parboiling, to mean that you might want to warm the sandwich up before toasting it, if you’re not getting a hot enough filling. Instead, though, I recommend cutting back on the fillings.
You’re going to want a pop-up toaster with wide slots. I suppose you could do something like this in a toaster oven, but that seems like you wouldn’t be living your best life. I have both, because, ironically, my toaster oven is perfect for everything … except toast!
Everyday Cooking
As I said, this isn’t fancy, and I doubt I’d make it for anyone but my family. But man, it packs a powerful punch! I eat them every week! Especially because you can usually toss pretty much anything you have in your fridge into one, even if it’s just a nice cheese and some mustard. Or Nutella and banana. And tortillas keep for, like, ever, so it’s easy to have them in the fridge at all times.

This is such a clever idea, Jeff! I love how you’ve turned a simple tortilla and toaster into a crispy, melty snack hack, pure kitchen genius for lazy-day cravings!
Thanks, Raymund. I saw the idea on Instagram, but I worked it out on my own – which is not saying much. The thing is, I eat one of these just about every time I have a little craving!
I think, yet again, my comments aren’t coming through — and MILAM isn’t the only place. I’m trying Google today to see if that works. But now the important stuff — this is a brilliant quick fix. While I love a good complicated meal, the easy stuff is when gets me through lunch! Thanks for the idea.
You’re welcome! Your issue could be on my end as well, I’ve been having work done to my site, and it’s been down here and there over the past few weeks.
Molto molto invitante! Fa venire fame solo a guardarla 🙂
Thank you, Daniela!
Sometimes simple meals that we make are definitely worth sharing. This is a great idea.
Thank you!
What a wonderful way to have a sandwich quickly! I sometimes find the bread too much in a sandwich so this solves that problem!
Thanks, Eva!
These tostaditas really have to be addictive. Good idea!
Thank you, Javier!
This Folded Toaster Tostadita sounds like such a fun, clever idea. I love the casual vibe of it – crunchy, cheesy, and easy!
Thanks, Ben!
Creating a sandwich using a tortilla that goes in a toaster… now that’s next-level genius. Talk about casting that humble counter top appliance in a whole new light!
Right? Thanks!
I’ve seen this and glad to see it actually does work well. We don’t use a toaster but there is one at work that I could bring this to make. Thanks for the reminder to try it.
🙂
That’s actually pretty brilliant. I only use my toaster for bagels and bread. Who would have thunk to use it like this? You’ve just blew my mind lol
Haha! Once you’ve tried it, you’ll be having one of these every other day!
Jeff, this folded toaster tostadita recipe is brilliant! Such a clever twist on the classic toastie with its crispy fold and melty cheese overload! Yum!
Thanks, Neil!
Jeff, a totally cool idea! Note made!
Thanks, Velva!
Oh we’ve definitely used that parmicrowave technique before – it’s perfect for recipes like this! And this sounds delicious. Why have I never thought about using flour tortillas for sandwiches?? This might just have to become lunch today!
It’s a genius idea – not my genius idea … I stumbled onto the idea on Instagram. But once I tried it, it instantly became part of my day-to-day routine.
Comment vanished? Just saying this looks great Jeff.

Oh, that’s odd! I saw both comments in my waiting-for-approval list, one minute apart!
What’s not to love about a toasted sandwich. Yours looks great done this way. Thanks for the inspo. Pauline (Happy Retirees Kitchen)
