Cakes Under the Influence

We fell for some cupcakes at Vertigo last night.

MiLam had a spellbindingly good time at the Vertigo Sky Lounge. We attended Cupcakes under the Influence, an event that was staged by Social Power Hour and featured Cakes Under the InfluenceSolerno Liqueur, and Deep Eddy Vodka.

Cakes under the Influence is a great idea:

Liquor-infused cake kits. Check out their website, Pinterest board, and this NJ.com article. You could steer these cakes in the direction of a Jell-O shot if you’re the kind of guy who digs that. But it’s a broader concept. Cakes under the Influence (CUI) can be about mixed drink or liquor flavors as much as it can be about alcohol infusions. What stands out is that these cakes are edible conversation pieces. They’re social lubricants, like the cocktails that inspire them. A great party idea  – or a reason to throw a party in the first place. It gives people something to talk about, something to eat, and something to remember. CUI brought an impressive variety of cakes to the party, made from their mixes and Deep Eddy vodkas. They were attractive, dense, moist, and sweet. They’d be showstoppers at any party.

Vertigo served up Deep Eddy vodkas all night.

The Vertigo Sky Lounge is sexy. If you haven’t been, go. It’s on the 26th floor of the Dana Hotel (corner of State and Erie, in the Near North) and has stunning views of the city. Read this Metromix review. The lounge has an outdoor patio, blankets and fire to keep you warm, and ravishing cocktail servers in little red dresses that you have to see to appreciate.

I spent part of the evening thinking that Deep Eddie was a line of alcohol named after Jonathan Edwards, who is widely recognized to be among America’s most significant philosophical theologians, because, you know, once you’ve got a few under your belt, who doesn’t want to talk theology? But then I thought, no, the moral philosopher Paul Edwards was the deeper thinker. I mean, you can hardly argue with his critique of cosmological argument without eventually needing a cocktail, amiright? Then I heard that Deep Eddie was from Austin, TX, and I thought perhaps there was some legendary perpetual-student frat boy who was the Jack Handey of the University of Texas.

“I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they’d never expect it.”– Jack Handey

I finally realized they were saying eddy, not Eddie.

…of Deep Eddy

Under the Influence…

I can see why you’d name an alcohol after a deep eddy, but I can also see why you’d name it after a Deep Eddie, so my vote is to keep the ambiguity going.[1]

Deep Eddy Ruby Red is so beautifully grapefruity, that I’m going to start drinking it as my morning juice. I’ll switch to their sweet tea vodka in the afternoons, and then when cocktail hour finally arrives, I’ll have a sip of the cranberry.

Thanks to Social Power Hour

miLam is grateful to have been invited. Social Power Hour combines social media marketing campaigns with targeted-audience networking events for small businesses in Chicagoland. We thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Notes:

[1] Eddy: Read about the Austin’s deep eddy that Deep Eddy’s named after here (not to be confused with Hippie Hollow, which would be yet one more good thing to name an alcohol after).

We’re currently working frantically on our next post, which should be out soon. In the meantime, don’t let the suspense get to you.

    • Thanks, Eloisa! None of it was actually my idea, but I’ll pass on the kudos.
